III STEP Mission

The physical therapy profession is at a critical juncture in its development. As the profession manages its transition to doctoral level education and autonomy in practice in the United States, it also must ensure that the emerging clinical science of physical therapy reaches maturity.

The mission of III Step is to:

  1. Link research and clinical practice together through the scientific exchange of ideas between basic and clinical scientists
  2. Promote academic-clinical partnerships which will develop and test innovative therapeutic approaches through systematic research in physical therapy
  3. Foster dialogue between the scientific and clinical communities to assure that evidence-based interventions reach the consumers of physical therapy practice.
  4. Provide education and training opportunities for graduate students and junior faculty interested in evidence-based clinical research and practice

III STEP Conference Objectives

The intent of III STEP is to assemble an international group of physical therapy educators, clinicians and researchers for the purpose of integrating recent advances in movement science into clinical practice. The gathering of clinicians and scientists will represent individuals with training in diverse, relevant disciplines (e.g., biomechanics, neuroscience, kinesiology, clinical psychology, movement science, physiology, health services) and with an established track record of research that provides an excellent and informed foundation for the design and testing of optimal clinical interventions. The conference objectives are:

  1. To explore existing and developing theories, models and knowledge regarding movement science;
  2. To integrate these theories, models and evidence into physical therapy education and practice;
  3. Describe and analyze the clinical usefulness of standardized tests and measures used for making clinical decisions and measuring outcomes.
  4. Present and analyze evidence to support the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions for individuals with movement dysfunction across the lifespan.
  5. To identify, discuss and analyze areas where clinical practice is evolving
  6. To identify and discuss the implications of scientific advances for physical therapy practice.
  7. Identify and discuss mechanisms that will enable educators, clinicians and researchers to effectively synthesize information presented and discussed at III Step
